Creative Habit Project: Week 3 Update

This past week I honestly had a very hard time finding time to work on my creative habit. Between two all nighters and other finals weighing in my time seemed to fully disappear, which is why I only have one new poem this week.

However I decided to take pictures of my the best poems written in the past couple of weeks  and edit them a little to make them look better in quality than the scans I was doing. I also decided to get rid of the objects I had in some of the previous poems because I felt that the habit would be more consistent and cohesive with the writing style and doodles.

Here is the Final:

I have still been listening to Arthur Russell when I write. However I have started to listening to a the new Ab-Soul album, “Do What Thou Wilt.” which has a very aggressive style in the writing which I believe manifested in my final poem.

Creative Habit Project: Week 2 Update

This week I think that I’ve gotten a lot more used to the flow of my creative habit. I feel a lot more comfortable with experimenting with the way I’m using words.

At this point I I really kind of sit and wallow in my thoughts and emotions to draw out the poetry. As much As I would love to just pull any sort of emotion or thought out, it is much easier and well produced when I take from my state of mind that day. I believe that it will also help me to have a stronger piece all together in the end.

Lately I’ve been listening to the album World of Echo by Arthur Russell from 1986. Russell is an experimental cellist and singer that uses a very ambient style of song construction. Each song on the album “World of Echo” is extremely unconventional when it comes to rhythm and tempo. Listening to these songs helps me think an experimental way and has affected the way i write my poetry in a positive way.

Creative Habit Project: Week 1 Update

This week Ive definitely started to realize how intense this process can actually be. As a person with very little spare time in the first place I’m learning that my original goals may not be 100% attainable. Although Im not sure in what ways i will do so yet, but I will definitely have to dial back on some of the process.

However, I’ve had a really good experience experimenting with the poetry itself. A lot of what I’ve been trying to do is mess around with the orientation of the poems and how words can symbolize the physical structure of it. I’ve also been keeping true to scanning some of them in with objects that represent the poetry. Although the idea of creating cinematic sound textures to go along with each was an unrealistic goal of mine that I’m putting aside so I can put more time into the poetry.

I’ve been doing poetry swaps with  my friends to gain inspiration and also writing while I watch movies. Just yesterday I started writing while watching “Princess Mononoke”. This week I’ll be starting the book “Everything is Illuminated” by Jonathan Safran Foer in hopes to gain inspiration from that as well.

Creative Habit Project: Proposal

Lauren withrow is an artist who most would describe as a cinematic/lifestyle photographer. I stumbled upon her work while researching for inspiration for this project.

To give some context, I would like to make poetic excerpts from short stories for my creative habit project. Basically I will create a scene, mood or moment that would be in a short story in a poetic form. I believe that as a Cinematic Arts major, my take on this project will help me with screenwriting and film direction in the future. As a music artist and poetry enthusiast, I am hoping to also learn more about poetry and how I can more effectively put it into my films.

Withrow’s photos, I feel, visually convey exactly what I would like to do with my poetic short story excerpts. Her photos convey an unfinished narrative and when looking at them you feel the mood, but are unsure of what is to happen next, which again is what I would like to convey with my work in this project.

The way I will present my work is by writing the excerpts in an old sketchbook of mine and then scanning them onto the computer along with items that resonate well with the excerpt. I was also thinking of creating small cinematic music movements to go along with it to emphasize the mood and scene of the excerpt.

I am currently satisfied with this idea and I’m excited to work on it. However I am constantly changing my mind so I wouldn’t be surprised if there were elements added or taken away from my current proposal.

I plan on doing 1 every day, 5 days out of the week which I think is an obtainable goal.

Pipeline Project: Week 4 Update

This week, we have successfully  finished our documentary according to schedule and in time for the due date of November 10th. I feel that between Josh and I our timing and the documentary could not have been executed better.

Still from documentary

Everyday of shooting we were prepared and actively getting the shots that we needed. We didn’t really encounter any problems while shooting/editing and it has been very smooth sailing all the way through.

I believe that the documentary successfully shows what the project is about, the collaboration between the group members , and the processes of the project coming together.

Schedule:

October 11th: (Pre-Production) Meet with the rest of the group and figure out what exactly our project will be, then based off of that decide what the feel of the documentary should be, how it will be shot, and the length of it.

October 18th-October 27th: Through these dates we will pretty much just be shooting b-roll and progress updates.

October 27th- November 3rd: Through these dates we will be conducting group member interviews and continuing b-roll and progress updates.

November 3rd-November 9th: We will be editing and getting shots of the finished product or getting finalizing progress updates

November 9th: Have documentary finished and shown to other for any finishing touches that may need to be added.

November 10th: Turn in Documentary.

This week has been a strong week for the group as well as for Josh and I with the documentary. We are right on schedule. Tuesday we already had the interviews finished and Thursday we will be ready to start editing. Josh will be doing the editing the video and sending me progress so I can add my input. We also plan on meeting up on  Monday to do the final export.

One thing that has changed from last week to this week is that the ‘genre’ of our documentary. We both decided that humor would be difficult to convey because not everyone may understand it, which does not aid the documentary. We are deciding to go a more straightforward route, so that the project our team is working on comes across clearly and there is nothing to distract the viewer from that.

As far as the style goes, it will be a generally upbeat video that shows the group strengths and some disagreements coming together to have a documentary that shows a group working hard together and successfully obtaining a goal.

We have not decided on music yet but we have an idea of what kind of music would sound good which would be the genre of Alternative Rock or Alternative Pop or something in between.

As my proposal suggested, I have been put into a group and chosen to be one of the documentarians alongside Josh Smukal, who in my last I mentioned wanting him to be the camera operator if I had to choose a team for my documentary.

Without revealing too much information, Our group has decided on a comic book/strip that changes based off of the readers decisions. This comic strip will be comedic and playful with some form of satire in it.

That is what we are also trying to achieve with the documentary, a playful “The Office” or “Parks and Recreation” vibe. We want to create some sort of fake drama between the group members through the interviews and have them working together in a team nicely in b-roll. We have also been following a long with the schedule that I originally planned out in my proposal so today we will be starting group member interviews and will be finishing them up by next thursday.
